Miss Valarie Raye Scott Crowned Miss Winchester 1962
In the Handley High School Auditorium Miss Valarie Raye Scott 20, daughter of Mr and Mrs James Raye Scott of McLean, was crowned Miss Winchester 1962 by Miss Barbara Ann Chaplin and Miss Charlotte Ann Thomas. Scott will represent Winchester at the Miss Virginia pageant in Roanoke in June and will use $750 in scholarships at Shenandoah College next year. Her talent featured a modern jazz dance. First runner up was Miss Rita Amelia Barbera of Keyser West Virginia, also 20 and a Shenandoah Conservatory of Music student.

Death on the Highways Claims Maryland Woman in Crash
A Maryland woman, Alpha A. Pleasant, 45, of Westernport, died at Memorial Hospital after a one car crash on Rt. 50 west of Winchester. Pleasant, a passenger in a car driven by William Pleasant, 55, suffered a fractured skull and abrasions. the driver was not admitted. The incident marked Frederick County’s seventh traffic fatality of the year. The car overturned after leaving an embankment. both victims were taken to the hospital. A separate two car crash on Rt. 50 near Winchester injured Richard Davis, 19, and Leslie Carper with modest vehicle damage. Another local mishap left Gertrude Cooper, 77, in Memorial Hospital and improving.
