City council votes to back Saary for police chief as local officials push a town cleanup effort amid a busy meeting. Residents weigh public safety and enforcement plans.
The Winchester council discussed traffic flow on Main Street and the possible relocation of the colored cemetery if a suitable site is found. Budget, street repairs, water and sewer work, and poverty relief were reviewed alongside public health and school concerns.
Regular meeting of Friendship Fire Company set for Thursday evening April 3 at 8 o'clock. Captain Fred W. Forney says business of interest to all will be discussed.

The Baltimore annual conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church opens at Harlem Park with Bishop William F. McDowell presiding. About 300 ministers and spouses from DC Maryland Virginia and nearby states attend along with many lay members. In Roanoke Virginia the Baltimore conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South holds its first business session led by Rev. H. S. Stevens followed by an anniversary gathering expected tonight with around 250 ministers and laymen present.
President Coolidge selected Harlan Fisk Stone of New York for attorney general. Stone, formerly dean of Columbia University Law School, had been with the New York firm Satterlee Canfield and Stone after retiring from Columbia.
The Market Street Playhouse hosts the musical comedy Venus tonight with an 8 15 curtain. Tomorrow the Girls Athletic Association screens Women Who Give with a vaudeville by local stars and a forty five minute interlude. Washington April 2 The House committee investigating Representatives Zihlman of Maryland and Langley of Kentucky resumed hearings behind closed doors. Zihlman chairman of the labor committee appeared with counsel as Bias H Mortimer testified linking to the Chicago grand jury inquiry. The Chicago grand jury found no ground for action against Zihlman. Langley was indicted for conspiracy to violate prohibition through illegal withdrawals of liquor. The panel will take up Zihlman first.
Secretary Mellon denounced the estate tax increase in the revenue bill before the Senate Finance Committee calling it economic death by own action. He said the estate tax is a levy on capital and should be left mainly to the states.
Five persons are dead and four more fighting for health after a blaze destroyed the Livingston Hotel in downtown Grand Rapids. Several others reported missing as a brick building suffered about 200000 dollars in property loss.

The Atlantic Coast Line Florida Special bound from New York to Florida derailed near Woodford Virginia. Engineer W L Nelson of Ashland died. Fireman J G Garatt of Orange injured. Eight coaches and the locomotive left the rail. passengers uninjured were moved to the Everglades Limited. Traffic blocked between Washington and Richmond. trains rerouted via Chesapeake and Ohio routes. Spread rails from snow and rain are blamed for the wreck.
R L Gray leads in council voting as Dr Julian F Ward wins mayoral nomination by 25 votes. First Ward totals list Ward 92 to Ward 1402 0 with Ward candidates Grimm 147 and Anderson 160 in the second ward. Candidates Gray Page and others named as nominees amid a politically tense primary.
George White, former Democratic national chairman, testified as the committee renewed its wrangle over relevancy of campaign contribution questions. Senator Spencer prompted discussion about a Democratic donor in the recent campaign, and the session adjourned after considering other witnesses.
Miss Rutherford of Lutherville Maryland plans to meet with Dr J Wit and accompany her to special medical consultation. She has worked long at the Chesap mac Telephone Company and seeks professional treatment for a hip condition.
