Cassius E. Barber, 71, and Romaine C. Potter, 75, were found slain in their separate homes two doors apart two miles west of a town. Both men apparently died from the same rifle fire, with Potter's death reported near Detroit while Sheriff Howarth investigates a prior felony record.
Edmond Cutlip, 28, an electrician for Carter Coal Company and Clinchburg native, was shot to death at the home of Deputy Sheriff Arthur Hamilton where he had gone to visit his brother Frank Cutlip. Hamilton was wounded once in the right leg and is reported in non serious condition at an Abingdon hospital. Sheriff Woodward provided the account of the shooting incident.

The War Department reports a heavy Japanese assault on the right center of Lt Gen Jonathan M Wainwrights line in Bataan was halted after savage hand to hand combat. Several waves of attackers were beaten back before reaching the main line. Minor air raids on Corregidor occurred and anti aircraft batteries shot down two heavy bombers. The Japanese embassy apologized for bombing a base hospital in Bataan.
Winchester launches Salvage for Victory with a city wide scrap drive on Saturday April 18. Junior Board of Trade directs the effort with Boy Scout and Girl Scout units Salvation Army and Handley Cadet Corps accompanying trucks to collect iron steel bronze aluminum and paper for weapons production.
