WISD keeps tax rate despite 10.77 percent value rise
Trustees left the property tax rate at last year's level a called meeting Tuesday night. The total rate of 1.71 was one cent higher than the 1.70 recommended by Superintendent Vernon Newsom and district staff. The taxes fund a 6 million maintenance and operation budget and about 1.22 million in debt service. With state funding uncertain, trustees added the penny as protection. Board secretary Aurora LeBrun noted higher bills despite the rate. Superintendent Newsom said the legal limit is 1.88 but they avoided rollback. After a failed motion to set 1.70, Will Marasek proposed and passed the penny. The extra cent could raise 25k to 27k. See Increase, page 4.
