Pension offset rules for retirees explained
Retirees should know how Social Security may be affected when collecting more than one retirement pension. If you earned both Social Security and a military pension, benefits are not affected. A government pension not covered by Social Security may reduce benefits under two rules: government pension offset for spouses or widows and the windfall elimination provision for work not covered by Social Security. The windfall was reduced by 1983 reforms. the example shows changes in the 1994 calculation. Exceptions exist for substantial earnings in taxed jobs.
