New flood plain maps take effect immediately in county
After a FEMA hearing the county adopts new flood plain maps (FIRM) effective immediately. Judge Eddy Etheredge notes mixed satisfaction and a 90 day appeal window. Public Health Director Walther says use the maps as best available information while old maps stay for insurance until final forms are approved. Some residents, like Jim Eichenburg, contest inaccuracies citing a 1929 flood and local structures. Appeals are the property owner’s responsibility, with FEMA expected to review without full data.
