FEMA finalizes second floodplain restudy for Hays County
FEMA completed a second floodplain restudy in early July and sent it to Baker & Associates for review. Hays County Judge Eddy Etheredge led a lengthy dispute after a previous FIRM had raised BFEs by as much as 10 feet, prompting a restudy that culminated in a Washington trip and a signed agreement for county participation and an accountable schedule. The preliminary map will return to FEMA and then await Federal Register entry and a 90 day waiting period.

Judge proposes retention of last year's tax rate
County Judge Eddy Etheredge unveils Fiscal 96 budget keeping the 0.4152 rate per 100 valuation as in Fiscal 95. Higher county valuations from the Hays County Central Appraisal District bring about a roughly 6 percent value increase and an estimated 1.004 million dollar revenue rise. A $100,000 home would pay 415.20 in Fiscal 95 versus 440.11 in Fiscal 96, an uptick of 24.91. Etheredge notes maintaining the rate requires shifting 590,000 from juvenile justice funds to debt service and drawing 676,000 from reserves, alongside the 1.006 million dollar revenue gain.
