A 1864 sketch, republished from the edition of Rev M Sherwood, portrays Uncle Moreau a Fulah slave who gained baptism at Fayetteville and fellowship in Wilmington. Born in West Africa near the Senegal, he arrived in 1807, escaped cruel bondage, and spent his last years in devotion, teaching Arabic scripture and living a pious life in faith. An advertisement touts a Keeley treatment to cure opium and liquor habits without nervous shock. It claims eight years of cure experience and references doctored testimonials from patients, by the Keeley Company of Livingston, Illinois.
