Democratic National Convention Opens in St Louis 1888

A St Louis dispatch reports the Democratic National Convention opening in the early hours with Chairman Barnum gaveling in at noon. Bishop Granberry led prayers and S M White California was named temporary chairman as the hall filled to capacity. Cleveland was celebrated as the presidential nominee and Patrick Collins introduced the presiding officer with further speeches and the unanimous nomination of Grover Cleveland. The session adjourned to resume next morning with Thurman nominated for vice president.
