Durham gains new civic distinction as an annexation vote passes though not yet in effect. Perry Case of Atlantic Christian College addresses Rotary Club on Rotary ethics and fellowship for two new members Cecil Tudor and Bob Townsend. Gary Fulgham reports cash for Christmas aid. cross word stunt, singing, and keen competition mark the meeting.
Crowd hovers near Camp Bryan as the Great Lakes Drilling company sinks a well in sandstone. The drill reached 560 feet last night after passing 512 feet with heavy machinery moving at full speed. Engineer B C Banks and his sons log depth while Geologist Butts from the state survey records earth formations and samples.
A Baltimore and North Carolina business delegation led by Senator F M Simmons met to push a water route between Baltimore and New Bern or Wilmington. They plan a 5 by 5 committee to ensure swift railroad deliveries, with a possible Senate or ICC inquiry if railroads fail. Mason L Williams promised New Bern port calls if port improvements occur.
Tom Gibbons of St Paul defeated Kid Norfolk of Baltimore by technical knockout in the sixth round at Madison Square Garden. The finish came at 55 seconds into the round after Gibbons bloodied Norfolk and cut him up. Norfolk hit the floor three times and the referee stopped the bout.
Goldsboro North Carolina December 9 A P F Moye a well known livestock dealer was cleared of aiding and abetting in the murder of J H Honeycutt. Judge Barnhill threw out the case after the acquittal of Will Tyner removing any suspicion of Moye. The charge was based on a rumor started by a local former convict alleging Moye gave Tyner money and an electric piano to commit the slaying.
Washington December 9 AP The Muscle Shoals question advances as the Senate defeats all amendments opposed by Underwood and adopts his favored changes without a roll call The final vote is not expected until late in the week with lengthy discussion anticipated by several senators Chairman Norris who opposes the Underwood bill plans to speak on the issue.
Spot cotton in New York remains seady with middling at 23.25 cents. Futures settle with December at 22.75, January 22.82, March 23.17, May 23.54, and July 23.66 cents per pound.
Duke James B. Duke, power magnate, announced a Duke trust fund of about forty million dollars for education and charity in North and South Carolina while stating he never personally profited from his roughly sixty million dollars invested in the Southern power system. He said all profits returned to the company for development and he never drew salary or travel expenses. The fund’s trustees will decide when power development goals are completed. Duke also helped found the American Tobacco Company and led British American Tobacco in prior years.
Nine men are believed drowned when the power boat Arthur Woodall burned to the water near Betterton five miles above Baltimore. A coast guard cutter found one body at the scene as rescuers continued search efforts.
The National League reported a 1924 paid attendance of 4,340,644, a new high and up 220,827 from 1923. President Heydler noted St Louis Boston and Cincinnati clubs posted financial losses and lower patronage than 1925.
The Civic League Hospital in Jackson Tennessee was destroyed by a roof-originating fire. Eighteen patients were in the building but were all safely removed.
Mrs. Carl Goerch entertained the Wednesday Afternoon Bridge club at her Vance street home with holly and mistletoe decorations. After the game a salad course was served to club members and guests including Mrs. M. M. Sessoms Mrs. T. J. Blackshear and Mrs. Steve Anderson.
