First Stockdale School Built of Logs and Slabs and No Desks
The piece recalls Stockdale’s first school, built of logs with a dirt floor and slab seats on puncheon legs, taught by Martin S. West, using Webster’s Blue Back Speller and McGuffey’s Reader. It notes late 19th century classroom life and local stories of bullies and community responses. It also shares town anecdotes about a Pandora gin, local teachers, and area events.
