Volume 5 number 23 notes Clydell Witte of La Vernia boasts of burpless cucumbers with low acidity. The crop also features Better Boy tomatoes, cabbage, beans, peas, California Wonder peppers, and sweet corn. Melvin Witte, her husband, is a known prize cucumber producer.
The Blue Belles of Floresville headlined a 250 mile cross country car race at Alamo Village Brackettville on May 13. Pam Johnson of Opryland Tennessee joined the Floresville group with Jody from the Brackettville film crew and the band promoted a Country Music program.
A correction from La Vernia Texas Mayor Ewald Koepp Jr states the Revenue Sharing and General Budget Hearing date is changed from June 29 1978 to June 27 1978. Sent to Wilson County Shopper.
The La Vernia German community maintained German at home and in church through Immanuel and Elm Creek Lutheran parishes in a largely Missouri Synod setting. Language shift occurred as English became dominant in schools and homes, with code switching common among older generations and mixed use depending on parental language. Traditional Christmas and Easter customs, including German carols and the Easter nest, persisted among families.
