Tin products put town on map in early Texas era
In northeast Wilson County near St. Hedwig, Carpenter rose to prominence for metal goods. Ed and Eric Ploch built a life craft shaping galvanized tin water storage tanks and prickly pear burners used to clear cactus for cattle feed. The Plochs sold tanks across South Texas and beyond, with Ploch inscribed on cisterns still seen in 1976. The town housed a general store complex, a saloon, a gin at Kott & Wiseman, and a strong local trade in cotton gin outputs.
