1997 in Wilson County A year of notable strides and shocks
Wilson County residents faced a busy year with a media raid on dog breeders, a disputed resignation of Path Mayor Gene Maeckel, and a missing person search for Patty Vaughan. U.S. Rep. Frank Tejeda died prompting an emergency election, while a burn ban was reinstated, a school building slated for demolition, and a city water system project moved forward. Floresville and Elmendorf saw police grants, road extensions pushed, and a court case led to a 20 year sentence for a shooting. Congressional and local races produced runoffs as political reshaping continued.
