The old timers recall a Feb 11 to 13 1899 freeze with minus 23 degree readings in Swisher County and a thin ice cover on Galveston Bay. The Wooly Booger front left record lows across Texas while this year’s cold remains severe but not as extreme as that historic event.

Fatal one car crash claims 27 year old Joe Silvas
Joe Rangel Silvas of Stockdale was killed in a one car accident 2 1/2 miles west of La Vernia when his vehicle left the road and struck a bridge abutment in Colibro Creek. Authorities say he likely dozed. discovery occurred after seven a.m. Funeral services are pending at Myers Funeral Home in Stockdale.
