Police arrested Leroy Vargas Sosa after a late night chase on New Laredo Highway in San Antonio. A 15 year old passenger was jailed for intoxication and marijuana, while Sosa faced capital murder charges in the slaying of Wilson County Deputy Sheriff Ollie Childress tied to the November 4 bank robbery. Police later searched for Pete Sosa, believed the trigger man, as investigators pursued new leads from a tip.
The Hen's Nest and Adams Apple, a handcraft shop, moved from the Masonic Building to the former Vic Rhodes Drugstore in Smiley. Owners Ruth Adams and Claire Poehler offer soft sculpture, macrame, silk flower arrangements, a coffee bar, free gift wrapping, and soon painting classes with custom color ceramic items. The shop operates 9 to 5 on most days, closes Wednesday, and features a large ceramic hen motif. The HiWay Haus Restaurant will serve New Year’s Day.
