County commissioners on December 13 cited an extreme wildfire hazard and raised the maximum burn ban violation fine to 500 dollars. The action also rewrote the rural burn ban ordinance to reflect the new penalty and enforcement.
Irene Woitena a 72 year old pedestrian died at a San Antonio hospital after being hit by a 1994 Ford Ranger near City Hall as she crossed F M 1346 on her way to a public hearing. Witnesses said the driver Jason Mengden did not see her in time. No charges have been filed.
A New Year fireworks safety zone will be held at the volunteer fire and EMS station on FM 775 in Eagle Creek. It starts December 31 at 6 p.m. and runs past midnight with sandwiches and soft drinks available, according to a spokesman.
