Cow birds accompany cattle and farmers in local fields
Extension agent notes egret companions to cattle and farmers. Egrets feed on fish and insects along streams and swamps, aided by long legs and bills. Once hunted for plumes, they rebounded after conservation. Local observation links a 35 to 40 year absence to Hurricane Hawaii origin and westward migration, with egrets helping control grasshoppers during haying.
