It notes Rabbits and Scuppernong harvests, a racecourse query, and county fair rail pass details along with coroner inquests and city street concerns. It reviews schools books and literature volumes from New York publishers and advertises upcoming events and theater.
Watermelons have disappeared from New Berne and cotton sales in Charlotte last week totaled 388 bales. The Republicans gain in Mecklenburg surpasses 200 and H C Jones wins Mecklenburg by 182, while William A Cherry is elected state senator from Pitt County by 124. A colored woman in Newport recently bore three children and Edgecombe M Torn ill, Capt J R Thigpen remains dangerously ill. The North Carolinian resumes under old name at Tarboro after Edgecombe purchase. A Tuscarora camp meeting drew local colored friends last Sunday along the Atlantic and North Carolina line.
In the Board of Aldermen meeting October 11 1869 Mayor Neff presided with Aldermen Kellogg Rumley French Howe Jones Arnold Servois present. Minutes read but Streets and Wharves report delayed. Various petitions discussed including taxes reduction, market stalls, fire department matters and licensing. Meeting adjourned after votes on horses use and clock erection. Rexs Davies City Clerk. A Brooklyn Jubilee note and New York peach price item follow.
Official Pitt County report lists W A Cherry Republican with 119 vote majority, a Republican gain of over 140. Pennsylvania reports a Democratic gain near four thousand from thirty counties, Geary's Philadelphia majority 3,329, GOP control in both houses, and projected state win for Georgia by large margin per papers. Ohio notes Pendleton defeat by a small margin while Hamilton County backs the Democratic slate.
Smithville dated October etc mentions officials in a sea incident involving a Spanish merchant vessel. The narrative notes the unarmed Inspector of Customs boarded the vessel, with E Legg Revenúe Inspector and Commodore Higgins in attendance. Rumsey Collector in Wilmington arrived, official communication and government authority cited via affidavit and warrant by Allan Rutherford U S Commissioner for North Carolina.
