The Chicago Inter Ocean reprints the Daily Commercial Bulletin’s review of hog packing for 1878-79. Winter hogs packed reached 2,943,116 with total winter packing 4,911,913, the largest on record, surpassing 1877-78 by 441,830 and exceeding all western city totals.
An advertisement urges readers to try Green's August Flower as a remedy for liver complaint and dyspepsia with symptoms like sour stomach, palpitations, constipations, dizziness, and nervous prostration. It claims rapid local reach and offers a sample bottle for ten cents with three doses claimed to relieve symptoms.
The excerpt lists right side liver pain under the ribs, sometimes extending to the left side and shoulder blade, with graphed symptoms including loss of appetite, digestive upset, headaches, memory loss, cough, fatigue, cold or burning sensations, prickling skin, low spirits, and distrust of remedies. It notes memory loss and postmortem findings of extensive liver derangement despite few presenting symptoms.
Advert reads Dr C McLane's Liver Pills as effective with Quinine for ague and fever. It claims no better purgative before or after Quinine and advises a fair trial for bilious derangements. Warns against imitations and notes genuine pills bear red wax seal and signatures, Fleming Bros Pittsburgh.
