The Minister Who Yankees Without Horns

A Tribune interview recalls Southern attitudes toward Union soldiers and the era’s racial hierarchy. A Wake County boy recounts wartime life, slaveholding, and a cook named Cherry who questions the idea that Yankees have horns. The narrative shifts to Captain G. P. Merrill describing observing Gen. Sherman during the march to the sea and supporting his potential presidential nomination.

To Keep Lard In Summer Storage

Instructions advise adding a tablespoon of fine salt per quart of hot lard to keep it sweet and white. The salt is harmless to cooking and helps harden the lard. It should cook briefly after salting and stored in a tight earthen jar or covered tin bucket for summer use.
