Convict Killing After Attempted Escape at Cooke Brick Yard
Two colored convicts Nat Hitt and Rufus Holesclaw worked at the Cooke brick yard on Walnut Creek. When halted during an escape attempt Holesclaw surrendered but Fill fled. Guard Johnson fired, striking Fill in the left shoulder blade and likely the heart, killing him instantly. The other convict Hill, 27, from New Hanover, boasted of escaping if overtaken outside.
