Battle Creek Michigan September 30 Republicans and Progressives from across Michigan gather for Theodore Roosevelt second campaign speech. A large tent rally is set with Roosevelt expected to speak at 4 PM.
John Dalton, returning home near Harmony, was dumped into the Yadkin River when a wooden bridge collapsed. The two horse team and Dalton were rescued. Dalton was shaken and bruised but not seriously hurt. The twenty foot drop and reports say the bridge has been deemed unsafe for some time.
J P Morgan, financial agent for Britain in the United States, sails on the New York to London to arrange a $250,000,000 British loan backed by American securities. Bankers say there is unprecedented demand for bonds. Ambassador Walter Hines Page and Mrs Page are aboard the same liner.
New Bern North Carolina September 30 labor shortages loom as many colored workers left for northern docks and rail yards. Farmers struggle to hire enough cotton pickers despite good wages and available manual labor. A concrete mixer from Craven County missing between New Bern and Chicago delays nine miles of brick road work on the Trent road. Dr M G Smith of the United States Bureau of Animal Industry advances public dipping vats in Craven County with several already operating aiding stock-raisers.
In Wilson North Carolina a new ordinance making cider sales unlawful reduced the presence of cider vendors around drinking places. Several dealers appeared before the mayor with three fined fifty dollars and another company appealing twice to the Superior Court claiming they acted as agents for a township constable who manufactures the juice.
