British forces have entered Combles on the western front and push to overcome German resistance. Combles, a 2,000 resident town, is said to be strategically valuable, aiding Allied mobility while hindering German operations amid ongoing Verdun fighting.
Edward P. West, vice-president of the Great Tea and Coffee Company, acknowledged he was the man known as Robert Wesley. He said con men posing as federal officials showed warrants at the Ansonia Hotel on May 9, forced entry, and coerced him into paying $12,500 to keep the matter secret. The women involved claimed to be victims and feared parental disgrace.
Sheriff Sears pursues Arthur Fowler, 17, alleged to have killed John Thornton near a baptizing service ten miles from Raleigh. Fowler fled after the shooting as Thornton drove people to the event. A $50 reward is offered for Fowler’s capture.
British and French troops reach Coembles after surrounding the fort and cemetery edges on the Somme. Allied gains include Norvel and Freigcourt advances as 50,000 shells explode nearby. fifteen thousand prisoners reported. Verdun attacked as guns in that sector are said to be effective.
Berlin dispatch reports Anglo French forces succeeded on the Somme last night. Romanian troops occupy heights on both sides of the Bal pass in Transylvania. German troops repulsed all Romanian attacks but withdrew per army orders. Russian forces made several assaults near Manajow in Galicia but were repulsed.
Morehead City September 26 The Second Regiment North Carolina National Guard entrained this morning for border duty at El Paso aiding the U S. armed forces and security along the border.
Charles E. Hughes arrived in Toledo Ohio amid heavy rain for brief speeches in a large auditorium before departing at 3 pm for Cleveland.
Elias Carr former secretary to the State Board of Agriculture lies critically ill in West Raleigh after a paralytic stroke. Governor Craig's office reports a requisition to New York for Ayers of Mecklenburg County. Farmville Brick and Ice Company is chartered with 40000 capital and subscribers from Farmville Winston and Charlotte. Metropolitan Grand Opera Festival of Charlotte is also chartered with 500 paid in of 25000 capital.
President Wilson voted in the New Jersey Democratic primary at his alma mater. He traveled from Shadow Lawn to cast his ballot and stayed briefly. He is understood to favor Attorney-General Wescott for Senator over Martine, but did not publicize his choice.
David D. Overton former Madison County circuit court clerk was arrested in Huntsville Alabama for the murder of former Circuit Judge Samuel Lawler. Lawler’s body was found in the Tennessee River on June 17 triggering a two week militia callout and a wave of suicides and sheriff’s death amid the investigation.

Wilson North Carolina September 26 area chamber of commerce officials met a representative of Lorillard Company to consider a cigarette factory here. The city aldermen voted to supply electric power at one cent per kilowatt hour for six months and free water for 12 months to any major manufacturer locating here.
London report confirms a Zeppelin raid last night killed twenty nine people as stated by the war office.
Washington reports confidential advices that Villa and his bandit command are moving north toward the American expeditionary force. Villa crossed the Northwestern Railway near Chihuahua after a clash with Carranza troops. officials say he was not present at Hidalgo day fight and no arms or deserters were recorded.
Oswego New York Sept 26 six members of the crew of the Rebercal of Ottaway were drowned when the vessel foundered nine miles from Oswego in Lake Ontario. Three survivors reached port by lifeboat and reported a violent storm overwhelmed the ship yesterday.
Governor Whitman will meet with a committee of state legislators to weigh a request for a special session over a proposed general strike in sympathy with street car workers. AFL Labor leader Hugh Frayne claimed 260000 organized workers were to quit. Clashes continued with elevated trains bombarded by strikers. three injured. Governor later indicated he does not favor a special session at present.
London dispatch reports General Moschotoulos, chief of staff of the Greek army and viewed as Allied friendly, has resigned. The Reuters dispatch notes the move comes amid ongoing tensions in the Greek military leadership.
The Robeson county Confederate Veterans reunion will be held in Lumberton on Thursday. Rev. H. A. Hill of Maxton will give the address. Dinners will be served by the Robeson Chapter Daughters of the Confederacy. Many veterans from Robeson and nearby counties are expected to attend.
