American troops enter the quiet first line trenches in France joining French units. Artillery fires the first shell on a German working party at dawn. The sector remains calm with mixed shelling from both sides and the Americans preparing for further combat steps.
French troops crushed German units north of the Aisne winning a major victory after four days of fighting. More than 11,000 prisoners have been counted with others surrendering or hiding. French guns enfilade three directions and bridges along the canal are destroyed.
The Dispatch contest ends tonight at nine with the second period wrapping up and the Diamond Ring as the top prize. Subscriptions must be mailed today to count, as out of town contestants will have until midnight to participate and all votes from second period will determine the final honor roll.
Petrograd reports Helsingfors preparing for evacuation as telegrams reach, amid German moves toward Finland. A Stockholm source says Germany plans a breakthrough with small forces to seize Russian troops, cut the Tornea railway, and sever Russia Sweden links.
Six of ten Germans who escaped from Fort McPherson were captured last night. Five were taken at Surry, Georgia, and Johann Adelharat, a non commissioned officer, was arrested in Atlanta. The capture involved agents of the Department of Justice.
London reports a supplementary estimate for a vote of credit of 400,000,000 pounds sterling to be moved in the House of Commons by Andrew Bonar Law. The total loans for the year will rise to 1,900,000,000 pounds and the wartime total to 5,692,000,000 pounds.
Houston reports warn Texas railroad and warehouse officials to guard against possible attempts to destroy food supplies in storage or transit. E A Pedan state administrator urged heightened vigilance to prevent fires in warehouses and on railroads as transport of foods, especially cattle, continues.
On the first day of fighting German units suffered heavy losses as divisions arrived from long distance. Fresh German divisions were seen at various points on the French front while guards surrendered in large numbers. The French Operan aimed to push forward and gauge enemy response as battle continued.
