The Associated Press reports Helaire Carriere was hanged at 12 10 p m in the State penitentiary for the 1916 murder of Marion L Swords sheriff of St Landry parish. He denied guilt to the end claiming a deputy killed the sheriff and he endured a lengthy escape attempt and self inflicted wounds before execution. The governor refused a stay despite a priest and nuns administering last rites and a plea from his attorney.
Forty clerks in offices of the Gulf Line railway at Jacksonville Florida went on strike today in sympathy with the clerks of the same railroad who had been out several days ago. The walkout followed the firing of a clerk yesterday and the union demanded reinstatement and better working conditions.
Four large immons Seriously Ill. doctors report Robert M4 former world heavy weight is critically ill at 1 p.m. today. The hospital says his chance of recovery is slim as he battles possible war complications in his vitality.
The St Paul Boy Scouts under the St Paul Loan committee plan a Liberty loan drive to set a national city record and win the Wilson banner. They challenge Scouts nationwide, aiming at New York Chicago San Francisco and New Orleans. Louis W Hill pledges 1 000 000 in bonds to back the effort and 20 000 subscriptions to start. One 12 year old Scout has already secured a pledge of 100 000 in bonds from Hill.
The Liberty loan campaign gains momentum with unofficial totals around 1.75 billion dollars and optimism that the $5 billion goal by October 27 is within reach. Officials cite regional contributions from New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and others, with total official returns from 12 Federal Reserve banks at 287 million, expecting more reports from outside banks.
