Paris reports a German submarine was destroyed as the French steamship Medie carrying munitions was torpedoed in the west Mediterranean on September 23. The Biskra led a convoy of French and British steamers, opening fire when the submarine surfaced, and the U boat disappeared after a fatal explosion.
In London on November 20 the American war mission and the British war cabinet convened at Downing Street to assess resources and needs of both nations. Lord Reading presided with Andrew Bonar Law and Oscar Crosby among attendees. Lloyd George planned to attend. Military heads from both sides, reporters, and photographers observed as Tasker Bliss and Admiral Benson arrived separately. Colonel House was not present. Gordon Auchincloss represented him. The meeting began at noon with Lord Reading opening proceedings.
Reports from Eastern Venetia say Udine is overrun by the central powers. Emperor Charles visits Gorizia and Udine while King Ferdinand of Bulgaria travels through Gradisca and Palmanova. Udine’s garrison is said to be Turkish and the citadel shows five flags Austrian German Bulgarian Turkish and Greek.

Union labor backed Samuel Gompers, head of the American Federation of Labor, for working with President Wilson to support the war effort. After a three hour debate, 435 delegates favored a resolution praising the patriotic work of the Alliance for Labor and Democracy, with 15 opposed. Rose Shapiro led New York workers in the dissent by abstaining on the roll call.
S S McClure, barred from University platform last week over pro German and pacifist ties, earns pardon after a personal visit. He faces the North Carolina Literary and Historical Association tonight and will also speak at Chapel Hill. He asserts his magazine’s pro German content stopped five years ago and his Evening Mail editorship ended but his name lingered until changes were made. A large quantity of powder at the Indian Head navy powder factory near here was destroyed by fire last night. The blaze started during transfer from a tank at a recovery house and spread to the tank causing an explosion. Several adjoining buildings burned but no serious injuries were reported.
Greenville South Carolina November 20 It is officially announced at Camp Sevier that there has been one new case of meningitis in the last 24 hours with no deaths. Medical authorities believe conditions are improving as measles and pneumonia are not spreading. Civilians may enter the camp under military quarantine. City authorities may impose quarantine to prevent this.
London reports 32,227 British casualties for the week ending today. Killed or died of wounds: officers 296, men 6,160. Wounded or missing: officers 293, men 24,848. Lists rising due to fierce fighting in Flanders with last week at 25,065 and the week before at 21,891.
