President Wilson spoke to the American Federation today during the annual convention, addressing labor issues and national concerns. The remarks covered workers’ interests and the administration’s stance on labor policy.
The American Federation of Labor requests direct representation for wage earners at the world peace conference and urges no vindictive terms. The report calls for international labor cooperation, eight hour workday, child labor bans, and free expression while condemning presses that undermine democracy.

Copenhagen reports Dr Bernard Dernberg chosen as candidate for Vice Chancellor von Payer’s Reichstag seat if he cannot run again. A possible re election by the Vice Chancellor remains if not named a Prussian minister and member of the Budesrat.
Zurich reports from the German war food bureau that over 10 000 substitutes are now in Germany. Among them 7 000 substitute for food. At the start of 1917 there were under 2 000 substitutes, of which 1 200 were food substitutes.
Admiral von Tirpitz addressed the Fatherland party meeting in Munich urging annexation as the war’s key issue. He warned Belgium must be Germanys protectorate for economic security and called the struggle a battle against Anglo American influence while pushing Antwerp and Adriatic settlements.
The Dispatch announces the contest ends tonight. Subscriptions and votes must be turned in now to qualify. Judges J A Orrell Marshall Shrier and H W Wells will seal and archive the ballot box, then count the votes at 7 50 tonight and award prizes including a Briscoe automobile $200 in gold and other items.
The Navy Department reports a patrol boat ran aground in home waters. No injuries are indicated and refloating efforts were begun promptly. the vessel’s name and location are withheld.
In Washington D C on November 12 the sixth annual conference of Southern State agents supervising home demonstration work opened to promote production, conservation and utilization of food during wartime. About 900 county and urban agents lead clubs with over 250 000 women and girls enrolled and 2 500 000 others reaching emergency food instructions. The conference runs until November 20 with participants from the North and West sharing ideas.
An Atlantic Port dispatch reports a satisfactory agreement between American and Dutch officials to release 100 Dutch ships held in U S ports for months. The first vessel in the program sailed last week bound for South America with coal and must return to an American port with freight. Neutral idle tonnage in American ports is estimated at 300000 to 400000 tons.
Dr. F. M. Winchester, 62, longtime Mason leader and past grandmaster of the North Carolina Grand Lodge of Masons, died at his Charlotte home after a lengthy illness. He also served as Eminent Commander of the Knights Templar and past high priest of the Royal Arch Masons of North Carolina.
Houston Texas Navy reports the first disorder linked to the oil field strike in the Texas Louisiana area. Seven strike breakers were attacked and beaten at Goose Creek as producers request martial law to be proclaimed in the field.
Secret Service agents report foodstuffs and other property valued at more than 73,090,000 held in New York warehouses and not reported to the government under the trading with the enemy act. This is only a portion expected to be uncovered before searches conclude.
Berle reports Teutonic successes on the Piave as British batteries advance and more troops move to the line. Italians are said to be captured as the maximalist revolution appears near ending.
Reports from Rome and Berlin describe Italian resistance along the northern front. Austro German forces attempt encirclement while Italian re alignment shortens the front to about 40 miles. Allies, including British batteries from the Carso, bolster morale and reinforcements are promised. In the Piave valley the Austro German advance traps about 10,000 retreating Italians, with Feltre under threat.
Atlanta Nov 12 The Southeastern district launches a drive to raise 1 500 000 for Y M C A war work at home and abroad across Georgia Tennessee North and South Carolina Alabama and Mississippi Committees appointed in all states as part of a nationwide effort to raise 35 000 000 for Y M C A war work
An army of 250000 workers in cities nationwide launches a week long drive to raise 35000000 for the war work of the Y M C A. Twenty five thousand committees will canvass all, with major corporate gifts such as 500000 from United States Steel 259000 from International Harvester and 250000 from DuPont Powder.
World War I dispatches report Italian forces stiffening along the Piave with repulsed Austrian gains near Feltre as fighting intensifies at Asiago and Setti Commandi. British operations in France and a continued British push in Palestine are noted amid Turkish losses and ongoing Allied advances. Kerensky-led forces threaten Petrograd as Bolsheviks waver.
Paris dispatch reports the censorship permits newspapers to announce the Prince of Wales has gone to the Italian front. He appears in public like an officer and has become popular, receiving ovations when recognized.
