Franco British line withdraws to heights near St Thierry as German forces press a steady drive. Americans at Cantigny hold against fresh sammy counter attacks but suffer heavy losses while attempting a counter blow.
British and French forces fall back as German wedge advances from the Aisne toward the Vesle and Rheims. American troops at Cantigny repulse counterattacks, seize the town, and take prisoners amid heavy German losses. General Foch oversees reserves as Canigny’s success boosts allied defense.
A hospital blaze erupted early at night trapping patients. Fire officials say the structure proved easy prey to the flames and fifteen people were confirmed dead with injuries and extensive damage reported. Local responders battled smoke and heat as the building burned.
A blaze at a Columbia hospital killed sixteen white male patients and injured four others. Fifteen victims died in the burning ward after rescue attempts failed to keep them from returning inside. Officials cited old structures and suspected defective wiring. the casualty list was withheld on Governor Manning’s advice as investigators began. The fire prompted an immediate coroner inquiry.
The American Army reports its line now runs 150 to 200 yards east of Cantigny after a successful attack. German trenches and outposts lie east of the new American positions while artillery and morale carry the advance. Officers praise the troops’ confidence and veteran like conduct under fire despite machine gun fire.
Washington May 29 The house continued debate on the 12 billion dollar army appropriation as leaders aim to dispose of the measure soon after the Memorial Day recess. The senate recessed yesterday until Friday.
Washington reports that House Ways and Means leaders plan to adjourn through summer while drafting the new war revenue bill. The program calls for disposing of appropriation bills by mid June, then recess until the revenue bill passage around August 10, with a 30 day Senate recess afterward.
Paris reports the long range bombardment resumed early today with German guns firing larger 24 centimeter shells and increased powder charges. Despite louder detonations the blast did not cause injuries to a man sitting on a bench nearby.
Paris reports General Foch has the situation well in hand as French troops press on German advanced forces in the speed contest. No vital line of communication is yet threatened, and within 48 hours the German drive may be halted. American forces in Montdidier earn praise for a veteran performance.
On May 29 American forces pushed nearly a mile into German lines around Cantigny as artillery smothered defenses. Twelve French tanks supported the infantry while German prisoners included youths and older men. surrender came as combat ended with many Germans dead or captured.
Italian Alpini seized Basin Presena lake after 40 hours of fierce fighting near Trent. They reached Presena mountain after four attacks under heavy fire and overwhelmed Austrians with a bayonet drive. The assault, at 12 000 feet, used specialized troops and devices amid melting snow and glaciers.
Tuesday, May 28. American soldiers who attacked the German lines west of Montdidier also fought in Monday’s raid. One man found a shell hole with two wounded Germans as prisoners. he guarded them until this morning’s liberation. Lt Irving W. Wood of Oakland said no American fatalities occurred and declared, We have got Huns on the run.

Indianapolis May 29 Senator Harry S. New declared President Wilson the most astute yet most uncompromising partisan since Andrew Jackson. He contrasted Republican support for war measures with Democratic backing of Lincoln, urging continued party loyalty while pledging to win the war and nominate state officers.
Fayetteville May 29 Former Mayor John C Gibbs has withdrawn from the Democratic nomination race for the lower house of the legislature leaving the field to Colonel George McNeill He cites poor health and a shift in views on legislation affecting the county and expresses gratitude for support while wishing McNeill a productive session as the unopposed candidate.
Mme Maria Botchkarova former commander of the Russian battalion of death was in Washington today arriving aboard a Pacific ship two weeks ago. She would not disclose purpose of her visit.
