Washington May 26 If the President is empowered to stop the use of foodstuffs in brewing and distilling no action will be taken until after a complete investigation Hoover said tonight if he has to deal with the matter he will recommend to the President the appointment of a committee of National scope and entire independence to determine exactly how much saving could be effected by such action The President would then weigh the results to be obtained as against such questions as dislocation of revenue and industry said Mr Hoover
Memphis banks and trust companies reported by the Clearing House Association have subscribed 3,151,500 in Liberty Loan Bonds, setting Southern records as of May 26 in Memphis Tennessee.
Special dispatch reports Governor Bickett calling North Carolinians to support universal justice and peace. He urges ministers to preach on registration, require all men aged twenty one to thirty one to register, with penalties for noncompliance. He asks papers to print six suggestions and to promote rallies June 3 or June 4.

Chicago May 27 A series of cyclonic storms swept Illinois causing a large death toll with estimates up to 300. Seventy five known dead and hundreds injured are reported with millions in property damages. Towns named include Mattoon Charleston Westervelt Modesto Manhattan Minooka and Goodenow with scattered fatalities and injuries and efforts to confirm totals continuing.
A Wilmington man was elected to a high office at the closing session of the United Commercial Travelers of North and South Carolina in Columbia. A parade and luncheon preceded the vote with resolutions endorsing President Wilson and pledging support for traveling men. Charlotte was chosen as next meeting place and officers including Thos H Pope and L H Burnett were named.
Havana May 26 Cuban artillery companies will be trained on American soil by American officers. Two companies will first be sent to an American fort, and after their instruction two more will go.
Washington May 26 Cardinal Gibbons to urge Catholic clergy to support the liberty loan bond issue. The Treasury Department said he has bought bonds himself and will address an open letter to clergy expressing strong sympathy and backing for the effort.
The North Carolina Bar Association may hear Senator Borah of Idaho at its July convention in Asheville. President A L Brooks extended the invitation to the distinguished statesman and advocate of progressive principles.
Buenos Aires May 26. President Braz asked congress today for permission to seize German ships now berthed in Argentine harbors.
Washington May 28 6 Riots and public disorders may erupt in New York unless the government moves quickly to create a national food control. Governor Whitman insists New York needs strong protection of the food supply for fall and winter. Hoover has drawn praise from governors nationwide for his appointment as food administrator.
