London reports from Plymouth say the Algonquin steamer was shelled from 4,000 yards and boarded by a submarine crew. Four bombs were placed and the vessel exploded, giving the crew time to abandon ship. The incident follows a attack with 20 shells from distant fire.

Blacksburg Virginia March 14 Charles B. E. Vawter professor of mathematics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute was arrested on a warrant charging him with felonious shooting Stockton Heth Jr at Vawter's home. Vawter waived preliminary examination and posted bond for grand jury. Details remain unclear as Vawter and his wife refuse to discuss. Heth remains in critical but improving condition at a Roanoke hospital.

Newport News VA March 14 George Bland an insurance man aboard the Leysian recalls the wreck off the British Isles on February 20 saying the vessel was chased by a German submarine before striking rocks ten miles from Fishguard. The ship unloaded horses at Belfast and was en route to Cardiff for coal when wrecked. All crew and horsemen abandoned in life boats and after about three and a half hours were rescued by an admiralty boat. The Leysian broke apart the next day at 7 30 p.m. after going onto the rocks. It left Newport News the first week of February the day before the United States severed diplomatic relations with Germany.
Former ambassador Gerard arrived in Washington and was met by Secretary Tumulty and other officials. The State Department arranged that he could not issue a detailed statement until consulting the department, and the president is recovering from a cold with no visitors for now.

The Howell shooting left him wounded in the hand and farmers joined in the manhunt.
