Engineers Route Change Delays North Carolina Company
Locals at Wilmington expected Company A Engineers to pass through en route from Lumberton to Goldsboro but trains shifted routes via Raleigh. Troopers and equipment left Lumberton for Goldsboro, disappointing families gathered at Union Station. A last check noted possible later passage through Wilmington on the way to Fayetteville for National Guard mobilization next month. Fifteen auto drivers face speeding charges before Recorder Britt.

On the Mac Rae farm at Rocky Point a group of boys woke to find the only ham they bought and hung in camp stolen. The $2.80 ham was their joint investment, yet they accepted the loss with good humor, blaming a wandering dog and still eating fat-back for breakfast before resuming work in the sun.

Railroad police beat city forces in costly comparison
Daniel V Scully argues in The Railway Special Agent and Police that railroad police departments, led by W P Edmonson in the Atlantic Coast Line Wilmington division, reduce rail crime more effectively and at different costs than municipal forces in Charleston South Carolina and Jacksonville Florida. The piece cites 1916 arrests and costs, noting rail police operate free of politics and focus on employer loyalty.
