Short Line Railroads Warily Settled Under New Amendment

Washington officials report Congress and the railroad administration reached a draft amendment to extend government operation for most short lines through January 1 next year. The plan preserves control for lines that competed with government roads and for carriers owned by or connected to government taking, protecting about 95 percent of short lines from abandonment and financial ruin. Senators Overman and Simmons urged swift action as the measure seeks U.S. Federal control benefits while finalizing terms.
