London reports daily national expenditure figures for three periods in 1916 and 1917. For nine weeks from Oct 9 to Dec 9 last year the average was 6.615 million pounds. For five weeks from Apr 1 to May 5 this year the average rose to 7.971 million, and for May 6 to Jun 9 it stood at 7.532 million.
Washington reports the Red Cross humanitarian dollars campaign surpassed its target with 164 million dollars raised by noon. The war council forecast 110 million by nightfall as Southern cities report strong contributions including Asheville Winston-Salem Charlotte Raleigh and more.
Omaha Neb June 26 William M Jeffers, who started railroading as a messenger boy at North Platte Neb 28 years ago, was yesterday chosen president of the Union Pacific railway He has been general manager for several years and retains that post alongside the presidency.
