Washington. The Southern Express Company pledges to end delays in shipping fruits and vegetables from the Atlantic Coast Line between Wilson and Wilmington to northern markets. Congressman Hood noted complaints of losses to eastern North Carolina shippers, and the company says a special representative travels with each train to prevent delays and will investigate further to ensure prompt shipments.
The Federal Trade Commission urged Congress to create government pools for coal production and distribution and for rail and water transportation. The report says current transport delays paralyze the coal industry and proposes full-cost pricing with a uniform profit, plus a wartime preference plan from the President for critical shipments.

In Southport North Carolina on June 19 a jury ruled for the Bank of Southport in the usury suit by L Miller seeking $500 in principal and a $500 penalty. The cashier admitted charging 2 percent over the legal 6 percent as brokerage. Attorney Woodus Kellum represented the plaintiff and Cranmer & Davis defended the bank.
President Wilson issued a proclamation designating June 28 to 30 as recruiting week for the regular army. He urged unmarried men without dependents to enroll promptly to fill ranks for war service.
At the 21st annual North Carolina Bankers Association session on Harbor Island a unanimous vote pledged $2,000 to purchase and maintain a motor ambulance in France for one year through the Red Cross. Col. John F. Bruton led the motion after Clement S. Acker spoke on livestock and agriculture as keys to prosperity.

Raleigh June 20 Governor Bickett reappoints Ward Wood as president of the North Carolina railroad and selects six long-time directors. Bruce White receives a $2000 State Admin plum as secretary treasurer, James P Cook keeper of the post. Colonel P M Pearsall is reappointed attorney. A separate case reports James W McGee Jr shot while riding in an automobile seven miles from town. John Sikes is jailed as a suspect.
