Battle front between Aisne and Marne remains active with resistance stern. French still hold left bank of Oise though lines in northern sectors may have been readjusted.
German efforts to breach French defenses between Montdidier and the Oise appear checked on the third day of fighting. French counterattacks reclaim ground on the western flank while center and right sectors resist renewed German thrusts. The Oise left bank remains in French hands though lines may shift near Ourscamp and Carlepont. Full-scale operations continue with heavy losses reported in the Belleau Wood area and in other sectors as American troops are engaged nearby.
Berlin papers concede failure to obtain immediate raw materials deliveries would bring Germany economic ruin as postwar conferences hinge on access to copper, steel, coal, cotton and other essentials. American dominance of resources and a vast merchant marine could dictate global distribution and potentially cripple Germany without allied cooperation.
Reuters reports Monday night marked a notable counterattack by native African soldiers with tanks aiding French forces to retake LaPorte farm on a 370 foot crest west of the Compaigne road and high ground north of it. Amsterdam reports the eighth German war loan subscriptions reach 15,001,425,000 marks, as Berlin dispatches confirm. The army contributed a large share to the total, with official readings updated today.
A Marine Corps casualty list released today shows 17 names including 11 killed in action, two died of wounds, and four severely wounded. Captain John Blanchfield of Brooklyn died of wounds. London dispatch reports German forces have deployed five divisions to blunt the American assault at the Clignon valley near Chateau Thierry with limited success. Two fresh divisions attacked Bouresches to retake the village but failed.
