Also in Goldsboro Emmett R Brown narrowly escaped a dog attack by a vaudeville show animal.
The American sailing ship Dirigo was sunk by a German submarine on May 31 at 7 am after a warningless attack. Third mate John Ray drowned during evacuation. survivors were landed at Plymouth with Joseph G. Stephens assisting them. The British Admiralty confirms gunfire and later bombing. other American vessels Frances M and Barbara were attacked in May with crews landed at Cadiz and Gibraltar respectively.
The American schooner Barbara owned by the Foreign and Domestic Trading Company of Boston last reported March 20 sailing from Port Arthur Texas for Spezia Italy with an ore oil cargo.
