Twenty four destroyers under construction will be named for famous naval officers. Secretary Daniels announced the list including Little McKee Stevens Philip Bell Stribling Kimberly Robinson Murray Wickes Israel Ringgold Woolsey Sigourney Gregory Evans Calhoun Stringham Gridley Dyer Sarding McKean Fairfax and Taylor.
Rome dated July 2 reports Venice was attacked by Austrian airplanes as the War Office announces. The Italians had earlier raided Trieste in reprisal.

Associated Press reports New York detective Joseph W. Grigg visiting to pursue Alfredo Cocchi case has been warned he may meet the fate of Lieut Joseph Petrosino, chief of New York's Italian bureau assassinated in Palermo Sicily in March 1909.
Washington dispatch reports the War Department will form 400 bakery companies of 61 men each to supply bread for the armies. The quartermaster general was ordered last night to implement the buildup, with expert bakers sought nationwide.
Zurich July 2 Associated Press reports German critics assess U.S. aid to the war effort. The Furter Zeitung editor says American help is substantial and will arrive beyond mere gradual steps, while potential German offensives may wait for spring 1918 giving central powers a window to act.
