British and French forces slow German advances around Mount Kemmel and in Locre and Voormezeele areas as Ypres defenses hold. French counterattacks recapture Locre. British defend Voermunzeele with hundreds of prisoners taken. On the Somme, Villers-Bretonneux retaken, Hangard threatened. 900+ German captives. Eskimo education pioneer William Lopp cited as shaping modern Inuit schooling.
New York reports German officials praise the long range cannon bombarding Paris as the greatest progress since powder. Cologne Gazette notes the 120 kilometre gun marking a new era in fortress and cannon construction, potentially affecting the war and future peace.
Washington April 27 casualty list shows 103 names: 11 killed in action, 4 died of accident, 2 died of disease, 47 severely wounded, 37 wounded slightly, 2 missing in action. Twelve officers named. several lieutenants and captains listed among killed, wounded, and missing. The list includes many privates and noncommissioned officers with detailed rosters.
Berlin dispatch says the German report lists 18 Americans captured in Leideprey sector. The Gazette Des Ardennes, a German propaganda organ, will publish the names, despite doubts about the prisoners. In South Carolina, Democratic clubs meet to organize for the August primary with factions supporting and opposing former Governor Cole Blease as U.S. Senate candidate.
London April 24 reports tied this morning that Baron Rhondda resigned as hood controller but a later confirmation shows the resignation not accepted. The big resignation remains unconfirmed as of tonight.
Paris April 17 Eleven American ambulance men win the war cross for gallant services in the current battle. Lieutenant Ralph Richmond commanding section 642 and Sergeants Junius Beebe G L Harris Henry K James B A Littlefield and John J Frennig cited for carrying wounded from positions near enemy lines under heavy fire.
Paris April 27 The standing of American aviators based on the number of adversaries shot down to date follows Major Raoul Lufbery 18 Major William Thie 5 Lieutenant Frank Bear 5 Sergeant Baynes 5 Captain Charles Biddle 2 and Sergeant Vernon Booth Sergeant August Grehore Second Lieutenant Henry Grendelass Sergeant Hitchcock Lieutenant Friest Larner Sergeant David Putnam Sergeant W A Vellman Lieutenant Allen Winslow and Lieutenant Douglas Campbell one each

Rails faced slight pressure as St Paul defers dividend action delaying government contracts settlements. Liberty drive barely affected local money conditions with easing call and time loans. Foreign exchange stayed stable despite a collapse in Italian rates. Amsterdam and Scandinavian rates fluctuated little amid Holland Germany tension.
Washington April 27 Semi official German statements claimed American aviators were moved to France on hospital ships and listed as ambulance corpsmen. Major General March acting chief of staff denounced the reports as incredible falsehoods stating no American airmen or other combat personnel were registered as non combatant troops. The German claim, relayed by Wolff Bureau and echoed by British denials, sparked re assurance from U S officials.
New York April 27 The jury in the Max Eastman case and associates tied to The Masses failed to reach a verdict. Judge Hand discharged the panel after about 40 hours of deliberation on charges under the espionage act regarding alleged conspiracies to defeat the draft.
