German forces launch a heavy assault along a 20 mile front north of Albert to Avre and Amiens as they press to disrupt the Allied line near the Avre river. British and French defenses repel the dawn attack while continued pressure on Flanders keeps Allied forces stretched.
War Department seeks graduates with at least one year of military training to apply for the Fourth Officers Training School. Applicants must submit personal, health, service details and three letters of character by May 1. Age limits apply, with 20 years 9 months to 32 years. An instructor and a cadet were killed in Wichita Falls when a plane exploded after takeoff.
The casualty list for April 24 shows 43 names: 6 killed in action, 3 died of wounds, 11 died of disease, 10 severely wounded, 13 slightly wounded. Lieutenant Renville Wheat is the only officer named. he was slightly wounded. Names span ranks from sergeants to privates, with multiple units listed.

Twelve ships of 9600 tons each and the rest 9400 tons. Contracts awarded to Union Construction Company San Francisco and Carolina Shipbuilding of Wilmington NC.
Washington April 24 The Shipping Board has decided on a substantial increase in its building program for 1919 over the tonnage planned for this year and indications are that the increase will be continued in 1920.

London reports strong German assaults last evening near Dranoutre in Flanders were repulsed by French troops. Heavy infantry attacks are under way in the Albert sector. North of the Somme and between the Somme and Avre rivers also see German pressure. Northwest of Albert another attack was repulsed yesterday evening.
In Leicheprey France April 23 American troops faced a heavy German attack. David Griggs 19 East Hampton Conn passed seven times through barrage to bring ammunition. Raymond Ferris Medford Mass was blown off road twice yet delivered his message. Charles Sinkler Philadelphia lawyer with Red Cross recounts two Americans with pistols killing eight Germans and capturing their machine gun. Sisters Gladys Irene McIntyre Salvation Army aided troops with coffee and doughnuts amid shelling while a motherly Salvation Army worker distributed comforts to men and praised American soldiers.
Several hundred gallons of wine were confiscated at John Keys residence on Carolina Beach road in Federal Point township by Deputy U S Marshal Burt Kelly and IRS Deputy Collector W A McGowan. The wine remained on site with receipt issued, and the raid cited failure to bond premises and operate without a permit. A quantity of sugar was seized as well. Keys, known for wine making, reportedly violated laws on two prior occasions by using sugar and water with grape hulls.
Engineers and shipyards staff from Carolina Shipbuilding Company were honored guests at Wilmington Rotary Club’s regular meeting at the YMCA. Hugo MacRae C C Chadbourn and James K H Cowan attended and spoke with praise for the shipbuilding effort. The club adopted memorial resolutions for Dr H Tate Moore, praising his integrity and service.
President Wilson stated definite opposition to a declaration of war on Bulgaria and Turkey during a conference with Senator King of Utah. King had introduced a resolution urging war with both nations, but after the talk he said he would not press it now. The Brandegee resolution had been laid aside amid Senate debate.
London April 24 Viscount Motono Japanese minister for foreign affairs has resigned. The Siberian intervention question likely led to his withdrawal after serving since November 1916 under Count Terauchi. Reports had suggested Motono might resign over the Siberian situation, though details were scarce.
The schooner Scotia from Jacksonville with lumber to Cape Cod arrived at Atlantis Port waterlogged in tow. Wreckers had cast away her masts and righted the vessel. Deck lumber washed ashore and may be salvageable.
The committee members G. K. Patterson and W. Polvogt express sincere sympathy to the bereaved family. They request the minutes note the resolutions and a blank page be inscribed to the memory of the deceased. A copy of the resolutions should be published in city papers and transmitted to the family.
