Godwin Sees New Era as Wilmington Yard Plans Advance

Congressman Hannibal L. Godwin touted a new era of prosperity for Wilmington and Eastern North Carolina with a government shipyard to build concrete merchant ships. The Shipping Board has begun plans for a Wilmington yard costing about 1 million dollars, three 3 1/7 thousand ton ships and three 7,500 ton ships at six ways, all government owned. The project includes river improvements, inland waterway connections, a Fayetteville basing point, and a port facility program centering on Wilmington's status as a chief North Carolina seaport.
