Washington April 7 plans of the House leaders were for a brief session Monday to concur in the Senate amendment to the general deficiency bill providing a special war fund of 100 000 000 for disposal by the President. The House would adjourn until next Thursday to let committees frame the war legislation. Rainey of Illinois ranking Democrat of the Ways and Means committee acts as majority leader and will confer with Secretary McAdoo on finance.

Raleigh April 7 The Insurance Commissioner and the Commissioner of Agriculture say volunteers who go to the front will have their positions saved if they return. Red Cross work and recruiting proceed, with patriotic resolve among residents and various groups. Governor Bickett received resolutions from Canton Council Jr and Western North Carolina Americans offering aid in the war effort.
French observers ready to see U S troops in Paris. Officers of the German gunboat Cormoran at Guam refuse to surrender as discussions continue.
The German cruiser Cormoran, interned at Guam since the war began, refused to surrender and destroyed herself. Two German warrant officers and five enlisted men were killed. twenty officers, twelve warrant officers and 321 enlisted men were taken prisoner. The action followed conflicts between American naval officers and the crew. Captain Roy Smith, Guam governor, reported the destruction occurred at 8 p.m. Washington time.
Reports of German commerce raiders near Atlantic ports prompt immediate patrols and port closures. A suspicious 10,906 ton vessel sighted near Nantucket triggers warnings from Boston Navy Yard and Navy Department as destroyers hunt the mystery ship. Shipping advised to stay in port amid heightened tension along the seaboard.

Captain Lindquist and crew of a Sarasota fishing smack reported sighting a large submarine in the Gulf of Mexico yesterday. The craft rose within a mile, had men on deck, but gave no response or identification, heading south three miles from shore off Sarasota Bay.
