Washington April 4 Conferees from the Senate and House agree on a bill imposing severe penalties for destruction or interference with war materials and utilities. The measure provides up to 30 years imprisonment and a $10000 fine for acts to injure or destroy war supplies including arms munitions rail lines and telegraph systems. Employees may not be barred from stopping work for bona fide wage talks but are penalized for interfering with production. The bill, after Senate approval last year, was broadened by the House and conferees at the Justice Department’s request.
Washington April 4 Director General McAdoo states he has received no protests from any railroad official about a requested cooperation between labor and management. He emphasizes ending suspicion and distrust and aims for mutual understanding to improve efficiency and safety, praising loyalty and support from railroad employees.
A Memphis report states that representatives of Southern lumber interests met with John H. Kirby of Houston Texas lumber administrator for the South and vice president of the Southern Pine Association. They discussed plans to speed timber production and delivery and to devise other measures to meet the government’s increased needs in its program. The conference, called by the Southern Pine Association, is expected to adjourn soon.
Five passengers were lightly hurt when a troop train collided with the Pittsburgh and New York Express on the Pennsylvania Railroad near Connemaugh Pennsylvania. The troop train carried drafted men from Indiana en route to Fort Hamilton New York. no soldiers were seriously injured.

Jackson Tennessee April 4 posses aided by bloodhounds from Jackson search Madison county for the murder of B. E. Dickerson 40 of Denmark who was shot while reading in his room last night. Denmark residents joined in the manhunt amid great excitement.
About 75 business leaders attended a Chamber of Commerce luncheon chaired by Hugh MacRae to discuss agricultural expansion in eastern North Carolina. L. J. Guion of the Federal Farm Land Bank urged more food production for Europe and to relieve transport needs, stressing canning of surplus crops.
Washington reports the third Liberty Loan issue will mature in 10 years on September 15 1928 and bear interest from May 9 with semi annual payments. The four week drive runs from Saturday to May 4 with five percent due at subscription and staggered installments through August 15.
Four firms have agreed to the bargemasters demands in Norfolk. The strike that crippled shipping for several days is partially broken this morning, with a final agreement expected with seven other companies at a conference this afternoon.
