Scraps of Local History from Bethel Cecil County

A Baltimore American correspondent recalls colonial Cecil history. Augustine Hermann owned the Bohemia Elk land before the Revolution and reportedly fled prison with his horse, possibly after a death sentence. His estate later passed to Bouchell relatives. The piece also notes Beecher sermons and scattered 1870s urban notes on New York and Petersburg fires.

Augustus Cevar feigned weakness to hide death pangs among conspirators at the capitol. Siward of Northumbria rose to armor as he died declaring a man should not die a beast. Maria Louisa foreshadowed death while awake and refused to sleep. Lord Nelson, mortally wounded, told Captain Hardy they had done for him and covered his face. Bonaparte died in his field marshal uniform and boots, prepared moments before dissolution.

Judge Church's Views on National Veritics

Chief Justice Church of New York spoke informally to a Tribune correspondent on national politics. He favored South relief from disfranchisement and oppressions by carpetbaggers, doubted Grant's renomination, and suggested Blaine or Washburne as likely Republican choices. He also noted strong hard money stances in Indiana and Ohio and predicted Democrats may win New York in the fall.
