Body of Child Found in Cesspool at 1400 French Street
Workers at King and Ue odorless repellers discovered a deceased female child in the bottom of a cesspool near 1400 French Street. Coroner Weldin and Dr. Ogle examined the body, noting the child was born alive and likely placed in the cesspool within 2 to 3 days. An inquest returned a verdict of death by being thrown into the cesspool by an unknown person. No clues on the mother. Also reports two more incomplete U.S. Senate ballots in the New York Legislature, showing votes for short and long term among Jacobs, Wheeler, Conkling, Lapham, Potter, Kernan, Depew, Platt, Cornell, Crowley, and others.

Train Tragedy Kills Garfield Relative in Ohio Crash
In CrEve Lane Ohio on June 22 a eastbound train struck a buggy 12 miles from town. Thomas Garfield eight years old, a uncle of President Garfield, died instantly. Mrs Alonzo Arnold, sister of Dr Benton, was gravely injured with a fractured skull. The buggy was dragged about 200 feet before the train stopped. News of the death and injuries reached the President and his family at Long Branch.

Injured Cart Driver Nearly Escapes Serious Crash
Eyewitness report states William Dougherty, hired by R. B. Smith, was hauling spokes when his team slipped near Orange Street causing the load to shift and the cart to trip. A wheel struck him, dragging him some distance and bruising his right leg above and below the knee. He was taken home at 114 E Second Street and Dr Lukens dressed the injuries. No bones were broken but he cannot walk at present.
