Stampede of 110 Texan Steers Causes Deaths and Havoc
A herd of 110 Texan steers broke from a corral in Oxnicaco causing a two block stampede through Wentworth and Thirtieth streets. Cowboy Sweeny killed many steers with a Winchester as crowds hunted the animals. Mrs. Mary Mulholland and 10-year-old Maggie Carney died after being trampled. Other steers were killed by a streetcar driver and by a laborer with a crowbar. The herd was corralled by dockyard workers after a nightlong hunt. The incident stirred gruesome looting of steer carcasses and animal parts amid cheering, with 43 of the original 110 cattle killed or lost.

The platform backed reform, anti-sumptuary laws, tariff for revenue, convict labor reform, civil service purification, and opposition to Republican excess. Lieutenant Governor nomination went to J G Warwick by acclamation as DeWitt Coolman withdrew.
