The Board of Health met in regular session with President Singley. The Committee on Impurities in the Brandywine water reported progress on the waste dye work and pipe system, with future work pending the attachment of Leander Kiddie’s facilities and city funds for improvements. A nuisance program was approved with multiple ward reports, nuisance abatement orders, and a rule requiring permits for cleansing cesspools with buckets and tents covering wells. Drr John Zebley, a joiner at the H & H C O, was struck by a band saw while removing cedar strips from logs about 16 feet long. His right arm was cut below the elbow, bones damaged, but surgeons saved the limb with quick action. He is home recovering.
Yesterday afternoon at McLear and Kendalls carriage factory Ed ward Mullen's right hand was caught in the cog gearing while at work. Three fingers were mashed and doctors decided to amputate after consultations. He is recovering at home on Fifth street below Lombard and is reported as doing as well as could be expected this morning.
The wheat harvest in Delaware county and state is unusually early and plentiful this year with quality high. Farmers report finishing by mid June, scarce labor aside, and Delaware crops surpassing Chester county in yield while corn also runs ahead. Delaware aims to shine as a leading agricultural state.
The Delaware delegation at Cincinnati assigns posts with names including Chair of the Delegations Ex Governor Salisbury and Vice President of the Convention Hon James Williams. Alfred P Robinson serves on Credentials while Edward L Martin sits on Permanent Organization. George H Bates handles resolutions and 24 Georg Gray plans to nominate Mr Bayard with Judge Abbott of Massachusetts to second.
The newly appointed Republican State Central Committee will meet in Dover on Thursday for organization. Rumor says I N Mills, former convention chairman, may be elected chairman and R C Frame Eyq Secretary. If the Republican President is elected, Frame may pursue the city postmaster post.
After ten years closed, the Cannon House at Laurel Delaware reopens under proprietor Thomas L Cannon. The refitted and refurbished hotel offers sleeping accommodations for fifty and aims to be the best on the lower Peninsula.
Boucicaults new drama Indiagoque a four act piece set partly in London and partly in Ireland tells of an Irish pilot who saves a ship, gains wealth, and confronts a wayward son whose London life leads to estrangement. In the end the old pilot’s plea restores family happiness as a wreck rescue seals reconciliation. Boucicault aims for a major London success comparable to Shaughraun or Colleen Bawn before returning to New York.
Washington correspondent reports on Garfields perceived lack of depth and maturity, predicting low Republican enthusiasm. He characterizes Garfields voice as warlike and notes critics like Don Pratt and George Townsend praise him only for potential foreign assignments.
Census enumerators led by Col. Whiteley see Wilmington population climb past 42,000, potentially matching Reading’s 1870 count. No arrests for refusing data have occurred except one manufacturer who initially balked at revealing his capital, later compliant. Rural enumerators report good progress despite harvest season.
This morning twelve workmen began removing the depot platforms of the Philadelphia and West Chester Railroad. Tomorrow trains on the Wicomico and Poco make railroad connect with Delaware Railroad at 9 25 a m and 1 05 p m. Directors of the P., W. & R.R. B. meet in the city today. a director may be elected to replace the late Joseph Bringhurst.
