Grant Receives Freedom of London at Guildhall

Gen. Grant was honored with the freedom of the city of London at the Guildhall. About 800 guests including government officials and American consuls attended a luncheon. a gold casket bearing Washington’s Capitol and the Guildhall entrance was presented to him. The Lord Mayor led toasts to the Queen, the United States minister, and the armed services, with Grant’s health toasted before departing with Mrs. Grant and Sir Safford Naracotte among attendees.

Beermillionaires growth of the lager beer industry

A Hartford Times summary tracing the rise of lager beer in the U S over about thirty years. Rugby Academy commencement features ex Governor Pollock address

The Opry House hosted Rugby Academy last evening with a floral set, declamations, essays, and music. Ex Gov James Pollock of Pennsylvania spoke for about thirty minutes urging graduates to pursue education, courage, and patriotic duty as they begin life beyond school.

Investigation by U S officers into the Kemper riot case reveals McClellan, a self avowed British subject, served in 1861 Confederate forces, sought to dodge conscription, and was deemed to have forfeited British protection by his actions.
