A Row Among Darkies at Scheuten Park Riot
A large crowd at Scheuten Park erupted into a violent melee after 3 PM as the Garnet Band led by Jamin clashed with the Orange Street faction. Police failed to quell the riot. George Wells and Phillip Burton were wounded, Wells critically as Burton defended himself and others. Wells was taken to Daniel Hamilton’s home. Burton to Shipley Street home. The incident prompted medical, police reviews and a Board of Health inquiry into drains, stagnant water, and smallpox cases while the crowd dispersed after the 7:30 train.
