Jacob Knopfel a 27 year old Swiss silk mill worker from 1544 North Sixth Street attempted to kill Miss Mary Shibe 18 of 1708 North Seventh Street after seeking marriage two weeks earlier. He then stabbed himself in the abdomen and was taken to the Pennsylvania Hospital. Miss Shibe fled to an upper floor and fears for her safety as Knopfel warned he would kill himself. Police intervened disarming him at the scene.
The Merchants Hotel on Fourth street below Arch Philadelphia has closed its doors and a furniture sale postponed to next Wednesday. Owned by a stock company and leased to James W. McDermott, arrears in rent led to a distraint by Magistrate McClintock. The hotel, opened in 1836, served Western merchants and was a political hub with presidents and politicians visiting, including Buchanan and Randall. R. P. Young offers ice cream from Third and Jefferson streets at low rates.
